Indian Education System Reforms: Time to Raise the Hands

Changes required in Indian education system

A significant step had been taken in the history of the education system of India by promoting the National Policy on education in the year 1968 to fasten the reach of education to the masses. It was aimed to promote the sense of common culture and citizenship amongst people, support from government to enhance and strengthen national integration and ultimately national progress was some of the facts government had planned for India in its education policy. Since then Indian education system reforms are in the progress to provide better and up to date education services in the country.

In early years of post-Independence era, Ministry of Education had envisaged powerful central government control over education system throughout the country and a uniform educational system was proposed. Later Resolution on Scientific Policy was adopted by the central government to enhance and promote the development of high-quality scientific education system in India. Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) was envisaged during that time to provide quality education to the people of India. This education policy laid stress on some serious efforts and reconstruction of the education system. The simple idea behind all the policy creation and corrections was to improve the quality and reach of education to all.

Since the adoption of the National Policy on Education (NPE) in 1968, lot has been changed in education scenario in the country at all levels of educational facilities. The Primary aim of the National Policy on Education which was formulated by the Government of India was to address the problem of illiteracy by promoting education amongst country’s people. This policy on education covers elementary education to colleges in both urban and rural areas. Today more than 90 percent of the people from rural areas have access to schools within a radius of one km.  There has been a remarkable augmentation of basic facilities at the other stages too.

A lot has been done since the inception of the first education policy to improve and strengthen the academic and education level of the country. Despite that education and learning is such process where it evolves continuously so as it diversify and extend to it. Every country and government put its tireless efforts to develop its system of education to support and express its unique social and cultural identity and it also works to stay updated with the time and to meet the challenges arises of the different times.

There comes a time in every system, methodology, a practice where a new direction becomes the call of the time to safeguard its existence and to stay updated according to the time. When we talk about our education system we have reached the saturation level where after decades-old stereotype education system is left no more competent to the present world scenario there is urgent need of drastic and concrete changes to evolve the system to its most beneficial point.  We have gained a lot in these last few decades where development in terms of economic and technological gains is visible and fruitful to the society.

But it is the time to change this whole system because today we are only printing thousands of degrees and producing millions of incompetent workforce who does not fit the latest technology and professional environment. The time is now when we consider this change as a highway to the goal of comprehensive nation-building. This comprehensive appraisal vis-à-vis the existing educational system will not only benefit the people of the country economically and in prosperity but it will also bring the country to the stature of world’s biggest economies.

We cannot reach the goal we have set for ourselves until the time we will not change and fasten the pace and nature of improvement to meet the need of the situation and this whole process needs to be planned and structured in great sensitivity and with meticulous planning. This whole system is standing at crossroads today where we need some quick, concrete and positive changes from top to bottom.

Some suggestion for change in Education System of India:

Actions required at Government level:

  • Policy paralysis and a dearth of a clear strategy of implementation, which is accompanied by an assignment of responsibilities in a diversified manner and without proper financial and organizational support, have created havoc for the education system of India.
  • We do not have clear vision today vis-à-vis future of education and academic progress. We need to accept and consider this to prioritize our goals and aims when we talk about correcting the system.
  • We need to develop a more responsive and quick system where things should work with better access to mass, with better quality of education, utility and with better financial assistance.
  • There is immediate need to bridge the gap between the rural and urban standard of education. Areas with poor infrastructure and substandard social services would not be able to access the benefits of trained and educated youth from urban areas unless the gap between these two areas are reduced and some serious efforts are taken to promote the diversification of employment and education opportunities.
  • Serious efforts are required at government level to formulate and implement a policy with a clear vision and with appropriate efforts to make the education system of India can flourish.
  • A holistic approach is required to revamp this whole system which is decades old and losing its meaning of existence and needs to justify it. It should not only include education for the literacy purpose but it should serve the main cause of skill development for employability and for a better life.
  • The pillars of education system anywhere in the world are the teachers, so it becomes very important to enhance the skills and competence of teachers. Motivating them by improving the quality of in-service and pre-service teachers by providing them professionally and advance level training can do the wonders for the system. Along with motivation, accountability should be there for ensuring learning outcomes.
  • Make such policies where other than elementary education, higher education for skill development and better employment should become affordable to all; everybody should have fair access to this education system.
  • By making some basic changes in policies and implementation process it is highly expected that no student will end their educational pursuit due to the lack of funds and economic support.

Actions related to different sections of the education sector:

  • Renewed action is required to spread awareness to teach girl child as they are the pillars of any family. By educating them one more important task of this society and government can be done easily that is controlling population as they are the future mothers too. Once they will be educated they can take decisions with the far better approach and with better freedom.
  • The main focus of education should be to develop and enhance the skills of current and future generations as this skilled workforce will not only become economically independent but it will help develop nation too.
  • There should be an improved and flexible education system which serves student’s need. There should be some liberty and must be some more options to choose from for students to continue with the subject of their choice.
  • Efforts are required from society also as more collaborative actions will improve and enhance the reach of the education level in the country.
  • Support student exchange programs to give them exposure to the study environment at international level. Thus, they will learn all this practically and can implicate this learning’s in their future profession.
  • Schools, academicians, intellectuals, educationist and people from society can come together to support this move of transformation.

By implementing these basic Indian education system reforms India can achieve the stature of ‘VishwaGuru’ again. As the students are the receiving end of these reforms and are the people who are going to be affected directly by any policy change it is better to take decisions with utmost research and precaution. Student need not to be worried about anything else other than his/her study. So that the main reason of all these efforts come as a fruitful venture.
