The English Dilemma: The Fight Between English v/s Local Languages

fight between english vs local language

The change in the professional environment in the Indian context has changed a lot of things especially the inclination towards some foreign languages, particularly English. People want to converse professionally and personally in this language just for their comfort or most of the times to impress others. This is turning as a first language when we talk about Indian society. Despite giving support to local languages to nurture them nothing much has been changed so far.

To worse the situation other than professional inclination even academic condition is more profound for this language today.  In changed scenario dedicated English medium schools are not even allowing their students to converse in their local language.

The Primary Reasons For The Imbalance In Languages

There are a lot of reasons, which create an imbalance in different languages and cause problems for many people. These reasons include academic, socio-economic, cultural, government issues or personal reasons. Before we deal with this imbalance it is important to know the reasons first and ability to understand it better. Few primary reasons are discussed below:

Academic inclination to this language:

The present structure of development of schools, colleges as purely English mediums is changing the scenario in all fields nationwide. People are more inclined to this medium in official or personal conversation making shy of other people who are not from the English medium background. This whole situation has created problems for those who have done their studies from Hindi or other local languages as they leg behind to converse in this language.

Government restrictions:

In fact, there are certain blocks of government, which mandatorily use English, as the first medium to communicate thus you need to be well versed with this language when you have some important work there. The prohibition of other languages makes the situation more complicated for non-English speakers and they need to rely on others in that case.

English as a ‘state’ language:

In fact, people in many states are proficient in English than the Hindi being one of the official languages of India. Thus, this situation creates problems for the majority of people from Hindi speaking states. To deal with the situation you need to rely on technological tools such as translators to communicate what you want to say or need to seek the help of others. In fact, both the ideas do not work so effectively.

Attitude bias for other languages:

Other than these issues one more big issue is taking English as a superior language to all, which counts all other languages at entirely low level. This biased behavior creates more problem who are not comfortable with this language and primarily who have been born and brought up in countryside areas. When you primarily rely on your local languages to communicate knowing bit of this alien language it becomes the task to get to the better levels in a short period of time as most of the opportunities are associated with having good command over this language.

English phobia or fear:

This is one of the biggest reasons why people do not get versed with this language. They simply don’t want to understand or learn this language for unknown fears or they shy away from this language. In fact sometimes being more open to this language and having an environment to learn people do not get bother to practice it as they have their local languages to communicate for. This phobia cost them heavy in their professional development as today most of the work in offices or even non-official work is primarily based on the knowledge of English language.

Lack of practice:

After the phobia or fear, which cost heavy to people in their professional development this is the next reason for poor communication or written skills in English. Lack of practice leaves you nowhere as you cannot command over any language without practice. You need to understand that it took years to you to command over your local language so as the matter with this foreign language, which needs the practice to make you proficient. All you need to do is to command over this language is to do more and more practice.

To deal with the situation concentrated efforts are required from all parts of the society and government.
